Technical documentation is the clearest case. A wiring diagram, an architecture drawing or a schematic pasted into a wiki as a JPG looks slightly wrong in a way readers notice without being able to name.

Contracts and invoices used as evidence are another. A clause quoted in a report should be crisply legible, and a JPG artefact across a number in an invoice is the kind of ambiguity that causes an argument later.

Transparency, backgrounds and expectations

PNG supports transparency, but a PDF page does not have any to give it. Every page has a solid background, so exported pages come out on white rather than transparent, whatever the image format is capable of holding. This surprises people who expect a diagram to arrive ready to drop onto a coloured slide.

If you need a diagram on a transparent background, export the diagram from the application that created it rather than from the finished PDF. Nothing recovered from a rendered page can be more transparent than the page was.

Handling long documents without stalling

Rendering runs on your device and PNG output is large, so exporting a long document at a high resolution is the most memory-hungry thing these tools do. On a phone this is where a browser is most likely to stop responding.

Export in batches of twenty or thirty pages, or drop the resolution a step if every page genuinely is needed at once. Both approaches are considerably faster than restarting an export that stalled three quarters of the way through, and batching also lets you check the first batch before committing to the rest.

• Using PNG for photographic pages. The file is several times larger with no visible gain.
• Exporting at a low resolution and enlarging afterwards. PNG preserves what it captured, not what it did not.
• Expecting a transparent background. PDF pages are opaque, so exports land on white.

• Assuming an exported page is searchable. Once it is an image, the text is part of the picture.
