   Click the thumbnails you want, or type a range such as 3-7 or 2,5,9-12. Ranges have to fall inside the document, so 40-60 on a thirty page file is rejected rather than silently trimmed.

   Confirm the number of selected pages matches what you expect. Off by one is the classic error here, usually because a cover page shifts every number in the printed document by one against the PDF page index.

   Select Split PDF. A single extracted range downloads as one PDF. Multiple output files arrive together in a ZIP archive, so you accept one download instead of twenty.

Extracting pages versus splitting a document

These are two different jobs that share one tool. Extracting means taking pages out and keeping them together: the signed page of a contract, the three pages of a form that a portal actually asks for, the chapter someone needs to read. The output is one file.

Splitting means dividing a document into several files: each invoice in a monthly statement, each certificate in a scanned batch, each page of a bundle that has to be uploaded separately. The output is many files, delivered as a ZIP so the browser prompts you once.

Getting page ranges right

A range is written as a start and an end, such as 12-18, and several ranges can be listed together. Ranges refer to PDF page positions, counting from the first page of the file. That is not always the number printed on the page: a report with a cover sheet and a contents page usually prints 1 on what the PDF calls page 3.

When the two numbering systems disagree, trust the thumbnails rather than the numbers. Select the page you can actually see, confirm the first and last page of every range before exporting, and if someone asked you for pages 12 to 18, ask whether they meant the printed numbers or the position in the file.

Making a large document smaller by dividing it

Splitting is often a size fix rather than a content fix. A two hundred page scanned manual that will not attach to an email becomes four attachable files, and each recipient gets only the part that concerns them.

If the goal is purely size, compare the two approaches before choosing. Splitting keeps quality intact and changes what you send. Compress PDF keeps the document whole and changes how it looks. For a scanned manual, splitting by section usually reads better than compressing the whole thing hard.

What happens to links and bookmarks

Internal links and bookmarks that pointed at pages elsewhere in the original document may no longer resolve once those pages are in a different file. A contents page that jumped to section four will not jump anywhere if section four was left behind.

This matters for reports and manuals and rarely matters for scans, forms or invoices, which have no internal navigation to lose. If the document depends on its bookmarks, consider sending the whole file and telling the reader which pages to look at.

Common mistakes worth avoiding

• Counting printed page numbers instead of PDF pages. Cover sheets and contents pages shift the two apart.
• Splitting every page of a long document by habit. A three hundred page file becomes three hundred downloads inside one ZIP.
• Assuming an extracted page has been redacted. Extraction copies the page exactly, including anything sensitive printed on it.
• Forgetting that ranges are inclusive. The range 5-8 gives you four pages, not three.
• Splitting a fillable form. Form fields may not survive, so fill the form first with Fill PDF Form.
