Interactive forms, flat forms and scans

An interactive PDF form, sometimes called an AcroForm, contains real field objects: text boxes, checkboxes, radio groups and dropdowns. Software can find them, list them and write values into them, which is what this tool does.

A flat form is a picture of a form. It might have been designed in a layout program and exported without fields, or scanned from paper. There is nothing to fill, because there are no fields to fill. Edit PDF handles that case by placing text wherever it needs to go.

Why flattening matters more than it sounds

A filled but unflattened form still contains editable fields. The recipient can change your answers, and depending on their reader they may see the form differently from how you saw it, since some readers render field content in their own way.

Forms this tool cannot handle

XFA forms, used by some government and banking PDFs, are a different technology built on top of PDF and are not supported. They usually announce themselves with a message telling you to open the file in a specific reader.

Digital signature fields cannot be signed here either. You can add a visible signature image with Edit PDF, which is accepted for many purposes, but a certificate-based signature requires software built around a certificate you hold.

Filling forms on a phone

Filling a form on a phone is normally miserable: the boxes are tiny, and every field means pinching, zooming and hoping you tapped the right one. Working from a list of fields removes all of that, because you are typing into an ordinary mobile form.
