Why a PDF opens sideways again after you rotate it

Most PDF readers offer a rotate button that changes the view only. It turns the page on your screen and leaves the file untouched, sometimes remembering your preference for that document on that machine. Send the file to someone else and they see the original orientation, because nothing about the file changed.

How rotation actually works inside a PDF

Two useful consequences follow from that. The first is that rotating costs nothing in quality: text stays selectable, images are untouched, and the file barely changes size. The second is that rotation is completely reversible, because turning a page back simply sets the attribute to the value it held before.

Rotation cannot straighten a crooked scan

Rotation works in ninety degree steps. A page that was fed into the scanner at a slight angle, so the text runs three degrees downhill, is not a rotation problem. Correcting it needs deskewing, which resamples the page image at an arbitrary angle and is not part of this tool.

If a scan is only slightly crooked and otherwise readable, most people leave it. If it is bad enough to matter, re-scanning the page squarely gives a better result than any software correction, because deskewing always softens the image a little.

Rotating as part of a larger clean-up
